Equity implications of Transit Oriented Development
We have a new paper out looking at the equity implications of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) in Curitiba. The city of Curitiba is internationally celebrated for its TOD planning based on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). However, few studies have examined how TOD projects are associated with socioeconomic and spatial inequalities (in other words, who actually benefits from TOD?).
In this paper we examine how the spatial organization of Curitiba’s TOD is associated with the distribution of population densities, socioeconomic groups, and real-estate values and its implications in terms of inequalities of access to employment opportunities and health services. The paper is part of André Turbay’s PhD thesis, which I co-supervised with Rodrigo Firmino.
